A Tour of Historic Elements

in the Filene’s Block

Generations of New Englanders remember Filene’s, the “World’s Largest Specialty Store,” on Washington Street. The eight-story flagship department store was one of the city’s leading tourist attractions, with elaborate window displays and the finest selection of clothing.

Although it’s a combination of shops today, in 2012, six years after Filene’s closed, Millennium Boston resolved to honor and celebrate the history of this focal city block by preserving artifacts that evoke Boston’s storied past. From the wrought iron railings of the legendary Filene’s to the Deer Isle granite that now serves as the Millennium Tower sign, clock, and bench seat, our neighborhood is filled with years of history.
