Lighten Up Your Lunch

with new healthy
restaurants downtown

Fast food is back for lunch. No, we’re not talking about greasy burgers and salty fries — quite the contrary. As a downtown resident you’re lucky to have some good and good-for-you quick-serve restaurants right around the corner. So this season, when lunchtime rolls around and you’re in a rush, head over to Clover or Chicken and Rice Guys for a light and tasty lunch. Both of these yummy spots are homegrown chains that started out as food trucks, so as an added bonus, you’ll be supporting local entrepreneurs while eating delicious and locally-sourced meals.

Clover

Started in 2008 as a food truck at MIT, Clover Food Lab quickly expanded to what is now over a dozen locations, all serving delicious, seasonal “fast-food”. According to Clover’s founder and CEO, Ayr Muir, their food philosophy is “driven by simplicity…If you eat with us for breakfast you know that we’re making the soup or salads in the morning and prepping for lunch…We make just about everything else from scratch every day.”  Another unique thing about Clover is that they have a small (but spectacular!) vegetarian menu that changes every day because, as they say “what is in season changes day to day, not every 3 months or 3 years.” Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are all served every day, as well as a carefully curated selection of beverages. The homemade popovers are great in the breakfast sandwiches and their seasonal fruit salads and soups are delicious afternoon pick-me-ups. For a behind the scenes peek at what’s going on today at Clover, follow them on their interesting and frequently updated twitter and instagram accounts.

Chicken and Rice Guys

The most recent newcomer to the Downtown dining scene, the Chicken and Rice Guys on Washington Street, have been pleasing Bostonian palates since 2012 when they opened their first food truck. Now they’ve got a bunch of trucks, plus pop-up shops and brick and mortar locations, but food-wise nothing much has changed. Their menu is short and sweet; choose from salad or rice, topped with Halal Chicken, Gyro meat or Grilled Tofu, served with pita, veggies and your choice of sauce. Which, if you’re in the know, isn’t really a choice – it’s ALL about the white sauce. One taste and you’re sure to begin to crave Chicken and Rice Guys on the regular. Their website is updated daily with their truck locations and times, and if you need a fix but can’t leave the office, they deliver via caviar. Nom, nom.
