Best of Boston
Autumn Adventures in the City
October 2017 _____
Now that fall has officially arrived, you can celebrate the return of colorful leaves, crisp air, and cozy sweaters with seasonal adventures throughout the downtown neighborhood. But in order to experience the best of Boston before winter’s first flurry, you’re going to have to carve out some time in your calendar. Spend your next weekend enjoying autumn’s colors or uncovering the city’s haunted history with our list of seasonal favorites right outside Millennium Tower.
BEST FALL FOLIAGE
If you’re up for a road trip, New England has some of the most breathtaking landscapes for appreciating the vibrant and full colors of fall. However, gorgeous fall foliage also abounds all throughout the city right outside your home. Take a stroll through the Boston Common or walk across the foot bridge near the Lagoon in Boston’s Public Garden and admire the changing red, orange, and gold shades. If it’s a warm day, you might even see a few ducklings sunning themselves in the water. Brilliant fall hues also take over the tree-filled Boston Esplanade and the residential streets of Beacon Hill.
BEST GHOST TOUR
It’s the season of spookiness and the best way to see the historic and haunted streets of the city is with Haunted Boston Ghost Tours.* This 90-minute walking tour is family-friendly, so if you’re expecting a scene out of “Ghostbusters,” then you might be a little disappointed. However, you will hear enchanting and chilling tales of Boston’s most famous ghosts and learn a few legends that certainly aren’t in any history books. The tour starts after sun down and your guide will lead you by lantern-light sharing tales about the Central Burying Ground Cemetery, the Beacon Hill Parkman House, the Omni Parker House Hotel, and more haunted downtown spots.

BEST TRICK-OR-TREATING
The costumes have been perfected and the kids have one foot out the door ready to begin their candy hunting mission. Sure, those fun-sized treats work in a pinch, but this year we’re looking to score extra-large candy bars – and Beacon Hill is your best bet. Most of these townhomes pride themselves on their seasonal decorations and mini haunted houses. Plus, heavily trafficked streets, like Pickney and Mt. Vernon, close to vehicles late in the afternoon to keep your little ghosts and goblins safe while running from door-to-door and screaming, “TRICK-OR-TREAT!”
BEST APPLE PICKING
When you’ve had your fill of urban fun, there are plenty of apple orchards right outside the city and October is primetime picking. Our favorite? Red Apple Farm in Phillipston. You may be familiar with their booth at the Boston Public Market. The orchard is stocked with more than 50 apple varieties and the family farm has several attractions including weekend barbecues, hay rides, cider doughnuts and fudge, and a petting zoo full of friendly farm animals. If you can’t find the time to make it out to the orchard, then be on the lookout this month for a special cider donut pop-up in The Club!
